Starting with the basic understanding that each child is a human being worthy of respect, I approach parenting with a job description. One of the things on this invisible document is that my child should be able, by the time he is an adult, to function positively in society.
With a young person with a normal neuropathy, this is difficult enough. But add in the unique difference of an autistic child and the task becomes quite challenging. Behaviors that are not socially acceptable might be explained as problems to a neuro-normal child, but for the child on the Autism Spectrum, this communication might be entirely wasted.
How to tell them "this is hurting someone's feelings" when they don't understand feelings? How to discern what is "willful child" that can and should be corrected with "autistic presentation" and what is an inherent part of their worldview and cannot be traditionally addressed?
