Not every football (soccer) league in the world is blessed with the riches of England or the skill and guile of Spain or Italy. Not every league has a hundred professional teams, thousands of players, multi-million pound sponsorship deals and huge populations to draw from. Most are not blessed with legendary teams on a par with Liverpool, Juventus and Barcelona.

This is true too of video and computer games such as Football Manager. Year after year, teams from the big leagues win out and dominate the intercontinental competitions. A team can rise to dominate its minor league, but it regularly loses players to middling teams in the big leagues. Their national teams may produce the odd superstar but never a good enough team to take the FIFA World Cup.

With the advent of the game editor on Championship Manager 03/04, users were able to make some alterations to leagues. Often, it is to gain instant gratification through some kind of superstar league, turning the Indian league or Welsh league into a super league over night. However, this rings false and becomes meaningless, a league with great foreign talent but nothing local. A Welsh league where the best player is still Baichung Bhutia and the best Welshman in the league is Ben Thatcher on a free transfer.
