A few months ago I was afforded the wonderful opportunity, in collaboration with a senior graphic designer, to design the cover of a new lifestyle magazine. Something different, something fresh, something liberating – that was the brief. After endless hours of drafting and redrafting and much market research, we finally produced a product that we felt couldn't get any better. As prepared as we were for constructive criticism, nothing prepared us for the response we would get from the CEO. In her exact words "No...I don't like it....It will never work." That was it; no explanation as to what exactly she didn't like or how we could improve on the product.

Needless to say, we spent the next hour or two indulging her in our thought process as to exactly how we came up with the cover, the specific use of typography, copyrighting techniques and graphic design detail and how it would would appeal to the potential target market. She eventually, but reluctantly, gave the approval for the design – as it was.

There is no perfect leadership or management style, it depends on personality, team structure, their maturity levels and nature of business. But surely there are just some basic rules and common principles that make for successful management and some that just shouldn't be entertained in new age business.
