The floods in Queensland and other states in Australia have once again shown the world that even in an apparently advanced, rich, first-world nation there can be times when even people in capital cities can be isolated and left without clean water, electricity, refrigeration and immediate medical care.
It doesn't take much work to find out how much at risk you are, and it needn't take much work to prepare yourself. I have defended homes from bushfires, waited out isolation and power outages caused by floods and protected property and possessions from gale-force winds and damaging hailstones.
