The first musical instrument that man ever played might have been a percussion instrument. Today, indigenous people still use tom-toms and other drums to stir the most primal of emotions. Drums are used frequently in modern and popular music as well to arouse strong emotions.

Soon wind instruments were fashioned from animal horns and wooden reeds. In the modern world, these became musical instruments such as the trumpet and recorder. The last instruments to appear in history were the stringed instruments. First came instruments such as the lyre and harp. Later musical instruments such as the violin, cello and bass were introduced.

The symphony orchestra is made up of modern musical instruments. The string section is made of violins, violas, cellos and string basses. The strings are the most important voices in an orchestra. The woodwinds and brass instruments add color and sheer volume, while the percussion section brings rhythmic effect to many orchestral pieces.
